About
Monica Dudley-Weldon’s journey is one of resilience, advocacy, and unwavering determination in the face of adversity. What began as a mother’s fight to find answers for her son became a lifelong mission to drive change in rare disease, healthcare policy, biotechnology, and national security. Her story is rooted in love, strengthened by purpose, and defined by a relentless commitment to improving lives.
In November 2012, Monica’s life changed forever when her twin son, Beckett, became the first child diagnosed with the rare gene mutation SYNGAP1 at Texas Children’s Genetics Clinic. At only four months old, signs of developmental delay prompted Monica and her family to begin a difficult search for answers. Determined to help her son thrive, Monica began documenting Beckett’s journey through a blog, creating a trusted space for families, caregivers, and advocates facing similar challenges.
That grassroots effort quickly evolved into something much larger. In 2014, Monica founded the SYNGAP1 Foundation, the first organization of its kind dedicated to advancing research, raising awareness, and advocating for meaningful progress in SYNGAP1-related disorders. As founder and leader of the organization, Monica built programs, cultivated partnerships, and served as Primary Investigator on the SYNGAP1 Patient Registry and Natural History Study, helping shape the future of rare disease research and advocacy.
After a successful 23-year career teaching secondary science, Monica retired from education in 2016 to fully devote herself to the mission of advocacy, research, and systems change. She went on to found Monica Weldon Consulting, LLC, where she advises clients across biotechnology, national security, healthcare, policy, and innovation. Through her consulting work, Monica has become a recognized voice in rare disease business strategy, legislative engagement, and regulatory policy, working with lawmakers, pharmaceutical companies, patient groups, and healthcare stakeholders to influence meaningful outcomes.
Monica currently also serves as a Senior Advisor Consultant at Squire Patton Boggs LLP in Washington, DC. In this role, she brings strategic insight at the intersection of life sciences, government affairs, regulatory strategy, and national security-focused innovation.
Her expertise later expanded into national security and biotechnology manufacturing. Monica served as a Life Scientist through Leidos, supporting biotechnology manufacturing strategy, industrial base policy, supply chain resilience, and defense-related innovation aligned with Department of Defense priorities. Her work has included portfolio oversight, stakeholder coordination, and strategic support for large-scale biotechnology initiatives tied to national preparedness and long-term competitiveness.
Monica is also a prolific author, public speaker, and consultant whose scientific and policy contributions have earned national and international recognition. Her work has been published or featured in outlets including Nature Neuroscience, The Journal of Pediatrics, and Value in Health, and she has contributed to major policy and advocacy milestones, including the 21st Century Cures Act, the first ICD-10 code request for SYNGAP1-related disorders, and the inaugural SYNGAP1 Voices of the Patient and Caregiver Report.
She holds a bachelor’s degree in biology with a minor in psychology and secondary education from East Texas Baptist University, and a master’s degree in law focused on health regulation and policy from Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law. She is also a Virginia Governor appointee to the Commonwealth Health Research Board.
Above all, Monica is a proud mother of five children, including Beckett and Pyper, and grandmother to Ella and Dakota. Her advocacy has earned her numerous honors, including being named one of the Top 10 Most Influential Women Leaders of 2022. Whether in the boardroom, the policy arena, or the rare disease community, Monica continues to lead with courage, compassion, and conviction—leaving an indelible mark on healthcare, science, and society.
